Politicians & their poll vaults

As Doonites gear up for the Lok Sabha Elections, hectic political activity has left them breathless

Dr Nitin Pandey

25-Feb-2009

February has been an unusually hot month for Dehra Dun. Even though the temperatures hovered in their twenties, Doonites have started feeling the heat of approaching elections. Hectic political activity, dharnas, physical violence and showering of new schemes by the State Government left Doonites breathless and the local press in a tizzy.

Plunging politics of Uttarakhand to a new low, NSUI and Congress workers beat up the Passport Officer, who is an Indian Foreign Service Officer, and ransacked the Passport Office in Dehra Dun, to protest against his alleged rude telephonic talk with Mr. Harish Singh Rawat, the Leader of Opposition in Uttarakhand Assembly and his harassment of a Dalit lady from the hills. Shockingly Mr. Harish Rawat defended the violence by his supporters and even sat on a dharna to press for withdrawal of cases filed by the police against the arsonists. Predictably the staff of Passport Office stopped working for 2 days, causing great inconvenience to people coming for all over the State. Long lines of anxious looking people could be seen outside the office waiting helplessly. Who is to blame for their harassment?

Cutting across party lines, the BJP MLA from Vikas Nagar, Mr. Munna Singh Chauhan, allegedly manhandled the Executive Engineer of Irrigation Department at Dakhpathar and even threw a shoe at him! As usual, the reason for the confrontation given by the politicians was bad quality work being done by the JE.

Since people look upon senior leaders as role models and follow their footsteps, it is imperative that leaders of our State set good examples. If we all start beating up every Government officer who is rude to us or is not doing his work properly and ransack his office, what kind of world would we be living in? If leaders don’t have faith in Official channels of the Government to correct wrong doings of its employees, what message will ordinary people carry home?

Eager to be the early bird, BJP released its list of Parliamentary candidates this month. Ace sharp shooter, Jaspal Rana, was given the Tehri Ticket. Since Parliamentarians are meant to serve people, it is surprising that the BJP suddenly realized that it did not have one person in its ranks who could serve the people of Tehri and had to “import” an ace shooter! The trend of fielding film stars and other celebrities in Lok Sabha elections shows the lack of faith of politicians in themselves. Political parties over the years have wooed voters by fielding film stars like Amitabh Bachan, Dharmendra and Govinda. Even though they have won the seats, their track record in serving the people have been pathetic. Dharmendra and Govinda did not visit their constituencies even once! Will the people of Doon accept a good sportsman, with no track record of social work, to represent them in Parliament? Is it similar to a company appointing a newbie as its CEO?

Trying to ensure that this early bird also got its worm, our State Government has gone into an overdrive from the last few days, trying to beat the implementation of the Model code of Conduct. Crisscrossing the State in a helicopter, with the Parliamentary hopefuls in tow, our Chief Minister has been on a gift showering mission. Borrowing a leaf from his predecessor’s (Mr. ND Tiwari’s) book, he has been inaugurating schemes worth hundreds of crores all over the State, every single day. On 22nd Feb, he laid foundation stones for 25 new projects worth 82 Crores in Haridwar! Sadly, numerous schemes inaugurated by Mr. Tiwari never lived long enough to see daylight. Will it be different this time? Will the electorate find uncanny similarities between the two?

The package was oiairnglly allotted in 2003 and was upto 2013, later it was cut down uptill 2007, then extended till 2010. If we are demanding it uptill 2013, it is just restoration till oiairnglly announced period.Public of Uttrakhand has played it's part by giving all 5 seats to Congress, now its turn of Congress Govt. at Centre to pay back, by extending the package.
