Quit Uttarakhand Day
In Dehra Dun, despite heavy rains, dozens of volunteers of CFGD, PSI and Latika Roy Foundation gathered in front of Gandhi Park and staged a very vocal dharna. Slogans for freeing the Ganga, halting dam building and saving the environment rented the air. A crowd of curious onlookers gathered who were also briefed about the issue by volunteers of the participating organizations.
Speaking on the occasion Dr Nitin Pandey said that the river which has for centuries has given life to millions of people is now itself in danger of becoming extinct due to excessive dam building. He said that if all the approximately 736 dams proposed by the State Government are made, there will be no river left except in Rishikesh & Haridwar. He said that putting Ganga into dark long tunnels was a criminal act and to generate power the Government should go in for solar and wind energy.
Himanshu Arora, a member of CFGD said that it is not correct to change the name of Uttarakhand, which is known as ‘Dev Bhoomi’ to ‘Urja Pradesh’ (Power State). If name has to be changed, it should be changed to ‘Parayatan Pradesh’ (Tourism State). He said that building dams on the river destroys the heritage of Uttarakhand, leads to displacement of thousands of people and is detrimental to wild life in the jungles around the river and to the dense marine life in the river, as well. He said that building dams cause colossal environmental damage and will ultimately lead to the disappearance of Ganga.
Speaking to the press, Jo McGowan Chopra, the Director of Latika Roy Foundation, said that just as 63 yrs ago all the Indians got together to throw out the foreign rulers, they now must get together again and join hands with the rest of the world to create a sustainable future for their children.
No Water = No Life
Among those who took part in the dharna were Sonia Pandey, Ruchi Singh Rao, Jaya Singh, Shubhendra Singh, Archit Bhatt, Neha Joshi, Swaraj Mehta, Raj Kanwar & RN Sachdeva.
