[Introduction] [When to go] [Ajmer] [Jodhpur] [Jaisalmer] [Jaipur]

After travelling through parts of Nothern Rajasthan last year, we could not but help going again to cover the Southern part of it this year. Unlike last year, when we stayed at Havelis, this year we decided to try out the economical Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation Hotels. RTDC has hotels all over the place, they are cheap as compared to the Havelis, have nice clean and big rooms BUT are "sterile" if you know what I mean. The staff is interested in doing its duty only, the warm welcome in private lodgings is definitely missing and the rooms from inside could be anywhere in the world. Though the hotels from outside are beautifully carved but the spirit of Rajashtan is missing in them.

We drove down to Ajmer from Delhi (400kms in 5hrs), then to Ajmer to Jodhpur (418kms in 3.5hrs) and then from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer (302kms in 4hrs) and finally back from Jaisalmer to Jaipur ( 668kms in 8hrs). We drive at around 110kms per hour, so adjust your timings accordingly.

From Jaisalmer to Jaipur one can come either via Jodhpur or Bikaner. The Jaisalmer - Bikaner - Jaipur route though a bit longer is better as it is straight (the route via Jodhpur has a long stretch of hilly terrain), has literally no traffic (the other is part of National Highway and has a large number of trucks) and therefore is much less tiring.
