Rajasthan

23-Dec-08 to 02-Jan-09

[Introduction] [When to go] [Jaipur] [Hotel Diggi Palace, Jaipur] [Bikaner] [Hotel Bhairon Niwas, Bikaner]
[Nawalgarh] [Shekhawati Guest House, Nawalgarh]

Driving through Rajasthan had been a long cherished desire, which we finally managed to fullfil this year! Driving has its own fun, you can stop anywhere, the roads in Rajasthan are excellent with very little traffic, you can choose your own timings and destinations. If you have a Bolero, like us, you can stuff any amount of luggage in it and we always carry a 20 litre Bisleri bottle in the boot, lasts several days, is cheaper and you can simply change it when it finishes.

If you don't want to drive, the next best bet is to take the night trains. There are very good trains connecting the major tourist destinations in Rajasthan. Check out the Railway Website where you can book and then print your train ticket.

We wanted to experience the "royal" Rajasthan so decided to stay at various Havelies! (royal villas). They are a little expensive than the Standard rooms of various hotels, but give a different experience and we think it was worth the money. If you rather stay at standard hotels, try the Rajasthan Tourism. Rooms are excellent and economical, clean with a good service. During our tour of Rajasthan we found that eating at RTDC Hotels (even if you did not stay there) was economical with fresh, clean and wholesome food.

We drove down to Jaipur from Delhi (325kms in 4hrs), then to Bikaner(340kms in 5hrs) and then onwards to Nawalgarh (230kms in 5hrs, bad road) and back. Lots of people go from Bikaner to Jaisalmer (350kms in 5hrs) and back to Delhi via Bikaner, though there is a road from Bikaner to Jodhpur / Jaipur / Delhi, yet the one through Bikaner is much better.
